In the Spirit of Service Not Self

Honoring our Heroes
Serving those who first served us
The American Legion Auxiliary is the world's largest patriotic service organization made up of spouses and female family members of current and past military service personnel. Our veterans are our nation's heroes and we are committed to ensuring they are never forgotten. Their sacrifice and service are a debt we can never repay, but we will keep the faith.
Who We Are
What We Do & Why We Matter
The American Legion Family has existed for over 100 years. Founded upon the ideals of God and Country, the American Legion is the world's largest veterans service organization. What many don't know is that our Legion Family is actually comprised of 4 branches:
The American Legion - Our Veterans
The Auxiliary (ALA)- Spouses and women related to veterans
The Sons of the American Legion (SAL)- Men related to veterans
The Riders- Legion family members and motorcycle enthusiasts who ride in honor of our military
Each member is eligible through either their own service, or the service of a loved one, making our "why" for service within the organization so important. Our reason for membership is because of humble gratitude. We are thankful for our freedom and the rights we are enabled to enjoy because of the sacrifice of so many brave men and women. All gave some, some gave all. We promise to keep the faith and raise the torch high- to never forget their sacrifice.

Activities in the ALA
ALA Unit 284 is part of a national organization, working within the Commonwealth of Virginia to help run and promote more than 20 programs. From the Poppy Program and Veterans Affairs and Rehabilitation to Children and Youth and Juniors, these programs are specifically designed to meet the needs of veterans whether they are active duty, reserve, disabled, homeless, retired, or honorably separated. Programs also aide military families, communities, law enforcement and first responders.

Support
We are always working to support through fundraisers, community outreach events, job fairs and more. The core of the ALA mission is service- support is not just line item for our organization, it is the very heart and soul of who we are, what we do, and why we matter.
Education
With our organization’s mission always in mind, we strive to find new and exciting ways to engage with each new generation to share with them the story of the veteran. We believe that educating our citizens on issues related to veterans and military families is crucial to growing a compassionate and caring community. We also believe that education is a fundamental right for which we are blessed to enjoy and that we should support those who provide and receive educational opportunities to our children and youth.
Advocacy
Legislative agendas centered around veterans and military service members are a core focus of support for the ALA. We rally together to fight for the rights and benefits that our veterans have earned. They fought for us, now we stand with them, lobbying with legislators to pass crucial legislation to the veteran's way of life.
